Our world is divided into many countries, language, politics, gender, race.......
At some point in time, someone started the idea of "us," and "them," creating a beginning of mindset that many of us (if not all of us to some degree) follow.
There is so much separation in this world.
Physical separation.
Mental separations.
Cultural separations.
Race separations.
Land separations.
I don't think separations are evil or completely bad. There have definitely been times when it has helped us connect to someone better. It is wonderful to meet people who have shared similar life experiences as you so that you can feel like they can understand certain sides of your story that others cannot.
However, I think a lot of this separation created by mankind is very unnecessary.
We have separated the physical space of lands into "your country," "my country."
How many of us have heard of things like "You _(insert your race, nationality, etc)__, you go back to your country?"
There is so much discrimination based on our way of being, looking, belonging when it's just natural, and does not determine what's on the inside.
Every country no matter how rich, or poor, has its own beauty. In fact, the poorer a country seems, the richer it can be in culture. Moreover, a 'poor' country is a lot about unequal distribution of wealth, which is a topic for another day.
There is sun, moon, sky no matter which part of the world you go to. We as humans look like humans regardless of where in the world we are. Our needs for food, shelter, companionship as well as our struggles, difficulties alongside happiness, zest, and joy are going to going to be there no matter where in the world we go to. It might be expressed differently, but the essential core needs and qualities will remain.
I think we are far more similar to each other than we realize, or give credit to.
Ultimately, we are all residents of the planet earth, experiencing the human experience, failures, setbacks, frustrations-- learning more about the trials and adventures of the human life.
And hopefully gaining the skills to overcome the various difficulties.
We are more alike than different.
Reflective Questions
How do you identify yourself?
How do you connect to your heritage, your culture?
What is something you have in common with someone you don't like that much?
What do you find to be some negatives and positives of living in a world with so much separation?
