My love of learning

I have been reading and taking intensive notes on Gary Chapman’s Love Language, both the marriage and singles edition. I experience deeper learning through extensive note-taking. Ironically, I have not often sat down to re-read the numerous, intensive notes I have taken over the years. Yet, the impact has remained with me. I have learned quiet a lot in the process of note-taking, particularly in the reflection made in between the notes.

On that note, have you ever re-read something and learned something completely different? It is interesting how we can read something and our brain picks up on certain ideas and thoughts. When we read it the next time, our brain may pick up on different concepts it had previously overlooked.

It is recommended that we read something multiple times to gain the most out of it- though unfortunately I have forgotten who that recommendation was made by! (It certainly was not me; I did read it somewhere.….)

Perhaps this is where the idea of studying in school was created, for us to grasp the concepts well. Unfortunately without personal interest, the mandatory studying requirement at school can be tricky to follow.

Reading is also about being in the right mindset. It can be difficult to read when your mind has too many thoughts, a pressing problem that requires your immediate attention, distractions in the environment like loud noises or people. I remember trying to read something while lying in the park with some friends. I was distracted by the conversation around me and attempted to read the same page for over ten minutes, only to end up giving up reading.

Until we choose a certain area of interest, there are much requirement of what we are supposed to read. In the world of education, even with the area of interest, there is often some requirement of reading that does not have the same level of personal interest. It becomes a learning requirement that may benefit us yet make it challenging to follow through.

Luckily, outside of this, we have so many options to choose from. So many sources of interests to satisfy and add to our internal zone of knowledge. Reading can take us to an entirely different world where we lose track of time and get sucked into a flow.

And one of my personal favourite things about reading is that it can act as a free therapy, self-coaching; a means of learning and development. The experience, findings and knowledge of people who have spent their lives dedicated to learning, discovering certain aspects of life has been captured into a paper, digital and now even an audio format. We sure live in a privileaged world (most of us anyway)!
