Journaling Prompts for New Year

Writer's picture: usha hamalusha hamal

Looking back at the past year, many things have happened. I see the end of the year as a review period to reflect on the lessons learned, lessons to learn; an opportunity for additional gratitude, and some future planning.

You deserve to have your own time, effort and commitment.
You deserve to have your own time, effort and commitment.

As humans, in pursuit of new goals and milestones, it is often easy to overlook all that has already been accomplished. It is not just your professional life that needs an end of the year review; it is also your personal life. This space is created to review it in a more self-compassionate way.

Rather than the focus being on all that you can accomplish in the next year, I invite you to end the year with some intentional journalling reflection.

End of this chapter is the beginning of a brand new chapter.

Here are some questions/actions to use as journaling prompts:

What are some things that stand out from this year? i.e are there any specific highlights that you want to remember 2024 by?

What are some things that made you smile this year?

Take a moment to look back at the year (look back at your camera roll, journals, or simply replay the year in your mind). What are some experiences, moments you want to have more of?

What is a new skill (if any) you would like to learn that you have not yet had a chance to?

Who were some people/ situations that gave you energy this year? Some people/ situations that gave you less energy?

Think of a difficult moment you experienced this year. Have you given yourself some healing time to move forward from this difficult experience? What is one thing you want to do to further support yourself through this difficult human experience?

Think of a compassionate way you have been there for someone in need. How did you show up for this person? What actions did you take? What are some things you said?

Using a similar compassionate approach, think of how you can do that for yourself.

What are 12 things you feel grateful towards yourself for this year?

Is there anything that happened this year that you would like to let go of?

I invite you to write a letter to yourself from your future self, who is looking back at this current you who has experienced the highs, lows and in between stages of life so far. This letter is coming from a place of more wisdom, life experiences, kindness and love. What messages, words of encouragement, source of support does the current you need to have? Let your future self guide the current you through this letter.

May you serve yourself well.
May you serve yourself well.
